Subject Description
The research area includes studies of flows through and around hydropower structures and their associated environmental impacts, focusing on hydraulic and ecological function. Investigations are conducted using advanced numerical models, including CFD and machine learning. The studies are also supported by experiments conducted in hydropower laboratories, complemented by field measurements and monitoring from hydropower facilities.
Job Responsibilities
The position includes independent research and teaching as well as project management. The assistant professor is expected to develop KTH's research, apply for research funding, and lead research projects. The research will partly be linked to SVC - Swedish Center for Sustainable Hydropower, and the assistant professor will collaborate with both industry stakeholders and KTH's academic environments within the subject area. Teaching will be at the undergraduate and advanced levels, and will also include supervision and teaching within doctoral education. The assistant professor is expected to teach in Swedish within four years. If necessary, a language plan will be established to support this in connection with the appointment.
The assistant professor will be given the opportunity to develop their independence as a researcher and gain qualifications that may provide eligibility for another teaching position with higher qualification requirements (see Chapter 4, Section 12 a of the Higher Education Ordinance). The assistant professor may apply for promotion to associate professor in accordance with Chapter 4, Section 12 c of the Higher Education Ordinance.
Eligibility
Eligible for appointment as an assistant professor is someone who has obtained a doctoral degree or has equivalent scientific competence. Primarily, candidates who have obtained a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent competence no more than seven years before the application deadline for the position of assistant professor will be considered. However, those who have obtained a doctoral degree or have achieved equivalent competence earlier may also be considered if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, or other similar circumstances.
Assessment Criteria
The assessment criteria for appointment as an assistant professor at KTH are those specified in Section 1.3 of KTH's employment regulations in relation to the established employment profile.
It is of utmost importance that the applicant has demonstrated scientific competence through scientific publications, conference participation, participation in research collaborations, and other commitments in the scientific community such as review or expert assignments. Potential for qualification for a higher teaching position is also included. This includes potential for independent development as a researcher and teacher within the relevant subject area, as well as the ability to establish, renew, and develop the current research area.
It is of secondary importance that the applicant has demonstrated interest in and insights regarding pedagogical development within the relevant subject area, interest in and insights regarding leadership in academia, collaboration with the surrounding community, and awareness of diversity and equality issues with a particular focus on gender equality. Administrative skills are also important.
It is also of significance that the applicant has demonstrated experience of postdoctoral stay in a research environment other than the institution where the applicant obtained their doctorate. Experience from research and development work within industry or other organizations may be assessed as equivalent to a traditional postdoctoral stay at another institution.
Special Assessment Criteria for Promotion to Associate Professor
When assessing applications for promotion to associate professor, the provisions in Section 1.2.4 of KTH's Employment Regulations will apply. The ability to teach in Swedish is a merit that is given great importance in the application for promotion.

Temporary: The position is permanent, but for a maximum of six years, and may be renewed if additional time is required to achieve the purpose of the appointment due to the teacher's illness, parental leave, or other special reasons. However, the total employment period may not exceed eight years. The position is part of the Tenure Track system at KTH, and the assistant professor will be evaluated for promotion to associate professor after application.
